Ampney St Mary consists of some 40 dwellings. Originally it was clustered around the Saxon Church of St Mary on what is now the A417. The village was demolished, probably in the 18th century, probably as a result of some local epidemic. Some dwellings were rebuilt in the present location, then called Ashbrook. The combined village retained theĀ name, probably by direction of the Established Church. The village has the status of a Parish Meeting. (source)
